Three separate music workshops have been held at İKSV Alt Kat: Learning and Interaction Space with the cooperation of Istanbul Jazz Festival and the support of Istanbul Development Agency.

The jazz workshop titled Magical Jazz Forest designed jointly and led by Avi Medina, Rüya Nesrin Kılınçkını and Sanat Deliroman was held for ten weeks between May – July 2019 with the participation of 8 to 11-year-old children from various NGO’s.

The music workshop Rhythmic Body Orchestra coordinated by Erdem Topsakal, where children between the ages of 9-12 and 12-16 conduct rhythm and body percussion studies, and Whose Voice Is This? led by Ezgi Barhan with 5-8 year-olds focusing on polyphony, are regularly included in İKSV Alt Kat’s workshop programme.

These workshops were also held for the 26th Istanbul Jazz Festival event, A Childlike Day, with children from the same age groups. As a part of the same event, the musical show created by the end of the Magical Jazz Forest workshop met with the audience.

These three workshops were created as a result of the Istanbul Jazz Festival’s Children’s Workshop Design Programme for musicians that want to work with children. This programme aims to support young musicians who are experts in their fields in designing workshops that will increase children’s interest in music and develop their feeling of rhythm and creativity. The musicians attended the seminar On Supporting the Learning Processes of Children and Teenagers Through Culture and Art Workshops held by faculty members of Boğaziçi University, followed by master classes with Barış Karayazgan, PACE Children’s Art Centre founder, and Sophia Alexandersson, president and art director of Sweden-based ShareMusic & Performing Arts.

The workshop programmes prepared by the musicians participating in the seminars and masterclasses were evaluated by; Professor of Psychology from Boğaziçi University Prof. Dr Feyza Çorapçı, faculty member of the Department of Mathematics and Science Education at Boğaziçi University Assoc. Prof. Dr Sevil Akaygün, İKSV Alt Kat and Istanbul Jazz Festival team members.
