Accompanying the Türkiye Pavilion at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, this book is prepared by the curators of the pavilion, Sevince Bayrak and Oral Göktaş, and designed by Esen Karol. Ghost Stories points to the search for a new methodology on how we can revitalise abandoned buildings by listening to the stories they harbour as well as collective dreams and discussions. A tangible expression of this methodological quest, the book includes striking examples selected from the archive of abandoned buildings created with the help of a nationwide open call on social media for unused buildings. The book also brings into question the transformation projects from different parts of the world.
The Carrier Bag Theory of Architecture, put forward by the curators, proposes a different path for architecture, inspired by the ‘carrier bag theories’ which can be summarised as ‘revealing the story of the neglected’ that Elizabeth Fisher employs in her theory of evolution, and Ursula K. Le Guin in her literature. By challenging the tradition of building heroic structures and transforming buildings only to bring them back to their former glory, the theory shows the necessity of a change in architectural understanding. The backbone of both the book and the exhibition is ‘A Manifesto for The Carrier Bag Theory of Architecture’, which sets out the parameters of this change.
This book is a source of inspiration and information not only for architects, but also for anyone who enjoys contemplating the built environment around them.
