Barış Arman
Director and actor Barış Arman started his undergraduate education at the Department of Architecture at Istanbul Technical University and completed it at the Department of Theatre at Haliç University. He worked as an actor at the Istanbul State Theatre and Craft Theatre. His various play translations were staged in several theatres. In 2017, he was one of the 70 directors from around the world selected for the Lincoln Centre Theatre’s Directors Lab. He graduated from Kadir Has University with an MA in Film and Drama. With a Chevening Scholarship, he went to LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts) where he completed his second MA in Theatre Direction. Following his direction of Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Kazan Dairesi), which received multiple awards from the Afife Theatre Awards, Direklerarası Awards, Yeni Tiyatro Magazine, Üstün Akmen Awards, and Sadri Alışık Theatre Awards, he directed A Walk in the Ordinary (Kazan Dairesi and the 24th Istanbul Theatre Festival), Last Five Years (Tebdil-i Mekan), Flu Lysistrata (BBT and the 26th Istanbul Theatre Festival), and Cabaret (Trabzon State Theatre). Interested in unconventional forms of theatre, Barış Arman continues to work on audience-centred and site-sensitive performances and runs Devised Theatre workshops under various institutions. He is also a faculty member at the Department of Theatre at Kadir Has University, where he is conducting doctoral research in Directing Pedagogy.
BGST Tiyatro
BGST Tiyatro, operating under the roof of the Boğaziçi Performance Arts Community (BGST), was founded in 1995 by graduates who had started their theatre journey with the Boğaziçi University Players. In the same season, it debuted with a dance-theatre performance titled Galip Sokaklara Talip. Continuing its activities by adding William Shakespeare's The Tempest to its repertoire, the company has presented 28 different plays to audiences to date, 24 of which are original texts. In recent years, BGST Tiyatro has won numerous awards in various categories for its productions, including Karşılaşmalar, Kim Var Orada?, Muhsin Bey'in Son Hamlet’i, Zabel, and Sevgi Soysal Yaşamakta Israr Ediyor.
In its productions, BGST Tiyatro strives to interpret the social contradictions and conflicts of the era in a way that aligns with the understanding of cultural pluralism. The company values collective creation in its work and aims to maintain a language close to the public in its staging and acting style, while also focusing on producing high-quality, avant-garde theatrical works.
